A data center rack is physical structure consist of steel and electronic framework that is designed to house the data center computing equipment such as, servers, networking devices, cables and others. It is designed to support the actual functioning machinery. This provides equipment placement and instrumentation within a data center facility.
The rack hasnumber of slots called bays, all designed to support a hardware unit held in place with screws. A rack server has a less attractive enclosure, as compare to a tower server, which is standalone cabinet. It is not just a piece of metal: its configuration can provide accommodation tothe equipment ofdifferent sizes and weights, and it can propose different sets of amenities which support several requirements of the facilities that use them.
The rack server configuration also modifies cabling between network components in simple way.A single rack can accommodate multiple servers piled one above the other, reducing the required floor spaceand uniting network resources. A special cooling system is essential, in aserver rack packed with computing equipment, to prevent unwanted heat buildup that might occur when several power-dissipating components are enclosed in a small space. Simply, the data centerrack can be referred as‘well-engineered box’.
In 2016, the global data center rack market was estimated approximately US$ 63.05 billion. It is expected that the market will reach US$ 228.40 billion by 2025. The compound annual growth rate is expected to reach 15.5% during forecast period.
