On Tuesday, 20th September, 2016, the federal prosecutors booked the Afghan-origin Ahmad Khan Rahami post the weekend bombings both in New York and New Jersey. He was charged with four counts and the use of weapons of mass destruction and bombing a public place.

Around thirty-one people were injured in the bombings in Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. During the arrest, Rahami was already charged by the state of New Jersey with the attempted murder of police. The update federal charges on Rahami included use of weapon of mass destruction, multiple bombings, destruction of property along with destructive devices. With the uncertainty in the Manhattan federal court, various charges were laid out in a federal complaint which said that a handwritten journal was found on Rahami, which admired the mastermind of the September 11, 2001 US attacks  Osama bin Laden and blamed the U.S. government of butchering Islamist fighters in Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and Palestine.

According to the criminal complaint, Rahami’s journal evidently conveyed the wish to die a martyr. "You [The U.S. Government] continue your [unintelligible] slaught[er]" against the mujahideen, or holy warriors, be it Afghanistan, Iraq, Sham (Syria), Palestine," one of the passage from his journal quoted. He also referred in a very glorifying manner about Anwar al-Awlaki, a US-born Muslim cleric who was killed in a 2011 drone strike, and Nidal Hasan, a former Army officer who killed 13 people at a Texas Army base in 2009.

In 2014, Rahami was taken into custody and investigated by FBI, but they failed to find any ties to terrorism and eventually dropped the inquiry. On Tuesday, the officials at The White House stated that the weekend bombings were actually “an act of terrorism”. U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in Lexington, Kentucky "The investigation is active and ongoing, and it is being investigated as an act of terror."

Rahami was taken into custody on Monday in Linden, New Jersey, following a gunfight with the police, which left him with multiple wound shots. New York Police Department Commissioner James O'Neill said that he was in a critical but stable condition but the police have not yet been able to investigate him in-depth.

According to the investigators, 28 year old Rahami planted two bombs in Chelsea of which one of the bomb failed to detonate. Whereas, the other bomb which he planted did explode in New Jersey seaside town on the very same day but fortunately no was hurt. New Jersey court documents suggested that Rahami has been preparing for months for the attack. He had purchased a few bomb-making tools on eBay and was filmed by a relative while lighting "incendiary material" in a bin.

These latest bombings that happened over the last weekend have actuated a stirred debated argument related to the national security amongst the two presidential candidates. Republican Donald Trump has clutched on to the fact that Rahami is an Afghan born to support his harsh positional attitude on immigration admissions. However, his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, has accused Trump of letting the terrorists by playing into their hands.

Mr. Ahmad Khan Rahami is still in the hospital, stable and recuperating from the gunshot injuries sustained at the time of the shootout which eventually led to his arrest.
