Prostate biopsy is a medical procedure by which tissue samples are removed from man's prostate gland with the help of hollow needles for diagnosis of cancer.
In ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy, the procedure is done transrectally through the urethra or through perineum. Transperineal template-guided mapping biopsy (TTMB) or template prostate mapping (TPM) is done which have high rates of detection of prostate cancer. In this process, around 50 to 60 samples are taken from the prostate through the outer skin between scrotum and rectum. The samples and the entire prostate gland then are thoroughly mapped by a 5 mm template under spinal or general anesthesia. MRI guided targeted biopsy is done when prostate cancer is not visible on ultrasound due to poor resolution of soft tissues. MRI guided biopsy is done by direct “in-bore” method, in which the biopsy is done directly inside the MRI tube or fusion method, in which the MRI images are fused with real time ultra sound.
