Ambulatory Surgery CenterAmbulatory surgery centers (ASC) or day surgery centers or day-care surgery centers or outpatient surgery centers are health care facilities in which surgeries are done that do not require overnight stay at hospital. The first ASC was established in 1970 in Phoenix, Arizona in by two private practitioners. 5 surgeries were done on the opening day of the center.

The surgeries are comparatively simple, less complicated and results in cost saving because hospital stay is avoided. Other procedures like colonoscopy, endoscopy, pain management, and diagnostics are also provided in these centers. These centers do not provide routine emergency services. In United States, more than 50% of colonoscopy procedures are performed in ASCs.

Common services provided by ASCs:

  • Angiography
  • Cataract surgery
  • Dental procedure- jaw surgeries, cyst removal, dental implants, teeth socket fracture etc.
  • Gastro Intestinal procedures- endoscopy, Colonoscopy, Fistulectomy, Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair, Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, Hemorrhoidectomy, Pilonidal sinus excision etc.
  • ENT procedures- Micolaryngeal surgery, Coblation tonsillectomy, Coblation adenotonsillectomy, Coblation adenoidectomy, Keratosis ear removal, impacted wax removal, sebaceous cyst removal, Tongue tie release etc.
  • Neurological procedures- Peripheral Nerve Schwanomma surgery, Entrapment Neuropathies surgeries, Endoscopic excision of Pituitary tumors, Endoscopic 3rd Ventriculostomy for hydrocephalus etc.
  • Orthopedic procedures- epidural lumbar and sacral Infection foramen, Lumbar and sacral spine Injection, Para vertebral lumbar and sacral Injection etc.

ASCs are usually run by a group of physicians who own shares of the facility. In few cases, it is private company owned. Some of the biggest ASCs in US include Envision Healthcare, Surgery Partners and Physicians Endoscopy, Tenet Healthcare /United Surgical Partners International, Ambulatory Surgical Centers of America, Affiliates, Hospital Corporation of America etc.

The major accreditors of ASCs include the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (Accreditation Association or AAAHC), the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF), and the Joint Commission.
