Electronic cigarettes, also commonly termed as E-cigarettes or vaporizer cigarettes are devices that are battery operated especially fabricated to render flavored nicotine and other chemicals to consumer in vapor instead of smoke. Many manufacturers claim that these E-cigarettes are an alternative for tobacco smokers who are trying to avoid inhalation of smoke. Smokes inhaled from tobacco consist of more than 4,000 different chemicals, out which most of it are harmful for human health. Electronic cigarettes are made to look like conventional tobacco cigarettes, pipes or cigars. Also, everyday products such as USB sticks, pens, and presently the more enhanced devices which have refillable tanks, might look a little different. A certain survey conducted on the e-cigarettes market states that there are more than 250 unique e-cigarette brands available in the market. Whilst e-cigarettes are mostly marketed as safer alternatives to conventional cigarettes, which are known to give nicotine tobacco burning process, very little is in reality known pertaining to the health risks of using these alternative devices.
Many components of an electronic cigarette
Most of the e-cigarette devices have a cartridge, heating element, a rechargeable battery, and some electronic circuits.
- Cartridge – also known as mouthpiece is fixed to the end of the tube, and a small plastic cup is meant for holding a liquid solution having altering amounts of nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals. The cartridge can be refilled or replaced when ever required.
- Vaporizer – it is a heating device, also known as atomizer. This heats up the liquid leading it to vaporize for breathing in. Also, a vaporizer has to be changed once every three to six months depending upon its quality.
- Power source – in most e-cigarettes, a lithium-ion battery is present which is rechargeable. This battery is known to power the heating element. Battery is the largest component of an electronic cigarette.
Also, many e-cigarettes, the puffing-up action triggers the battery-powered heating device, which vaporizes the liquid in the cartridge. The resultant vapor or aerosol is later inhaled. Lastly, e-cigarettes are a tobacco product, which is why the American Lung Association is yet concerned about their affect on the public health.
