Medical Implants and their KindsMedical implants are devices which are manufactured to replace and substitute a missing biological structure, render support to an injured and damaged biological structure, or improve an existing biological structure. Medical implants are synthetic manmade devices, in contradiction of a transplant which is a transplanted biomedical tissue. Many of the medical implants are prosthetics, which are meant to substitute missing body parts. While some implants are made out of skin, bone or other body tissues, others are made of plastic, metal, ceramic, etc. A few medical implants carry medication, keep a tab on body function, and/or render support to tissues and organs. Implants are either placed permanently or they can be removed later once they solve the purpose for which they were meant. For instance, hip implants or stents are proposed to be permanent, however, chemotherapy ports, screws in order to rectify broken bones can be removed when their purpose is fulfilled. The surface of medical implants which comes in contact with the body might be of biomedical material such as silicone, apatite or titanium depending upon what is most functional. Some medical implants contain electronics, e.g., cochlear implants and artificial pacemaker; on the other hand, certain implants are bioactive, such as hypodermic drug delivery devices in the form of implantable pills or drug-eluting stents.

With every medical implant, there is significant risk involved. Medical implants include surgical risks at the time of placement or removal, infection, and implant failure. in a certain study done on medical implants market states that over time, the medical implants might move, break, or even stop functioning properly; and when this happen a patient might require a re-surgery to repair or replace the implant. A patient’s body might also react to the materials used in the implants. All surgical procedures involve risks and one such risk is pain, swelling, inflammation and redness at the surgical site. Infections are the most common risk associated with medical implants, where most come from skin contamination during the surgical procedure. If a patient contracts an infection, he or she will need a drain inserted near the implant, which will drain out the abscess or waste blood, along with that consume medication to combat the infection more effectively. Lastly, in worst case scenario, the implant may have to be removed if the mentioned ways do not help.
